Boston.com feature: Endless winter on the Hill

Boston.com ran a piece on challenges of the slowly developing Winter Hill area. Here's an excerpt:

By Danielle Dreilinger, Globe Correspondent

All across Somerville, people and businesses are revving up for spring. The 'dozers are about to start again in Union and Assembly squares for government-funded improvement projects. New Davis Square restaurants have filed for sidewalk café permits. The East Somerville Main Streets business development group holds itsannual party/meeting March 9. And surveyors traverse the future Green Line, which promises to improve property values and business along its track.

But for Winter Hill's businesses, it's still winter. "We're the Rodney Dangerfield of squares lately," lamented Vic Leone in his family's sub shop. In summer, Foss Park draws soccer-playing crowds, but right now, the once-thriving Broadway strip looks drab as a rainy day.

Hallelujah The Hill

For anyone who has been to the Paul Revere Beverage on Main Street right off Broadway in Winter Hill, you probably noticed that it was dying a slow, slow death for quite some time. Brazilian Times‎ is published out of Winter Hill

I was recently tipped off about the fact that publishing headquarters for Brazilian Times is right here in Winter Hill:

Given the "estimated more than 30,000 Brazilians living in Somerville", this is obviously a great resource to the local community and beyond. The one catch- as far as I know there is currently no English language translation; however, Marcelo Zicker, a reporter with the Brazilian Times will be writing for Somerville Scout as a reporter and blogger with posts in both English and Portuguese, covering events promoted by the Brazilian community.

Christmas Tree and Wreath Sale at Foss Park Pool!

Next Wave Junior High School and Full Circle High School are Somerville's alternative, moderate special needs schools. Both are designed to meet the special academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of adolescents and teens who, for many reasons, have experienced failure in the traditional education settings.

More information can be found at the Next Wave/Full Circle Site.

And, from their site:
The annual Next Wave and Full Circle Christmas Tree and Wreath Fundraiser began on Wednesday, December 2nd at 4:00 PM. Live, fresh wreaths for $15 and live trees ranging in price from $19 to $49 are for sale in the tree lot, located near the DCR pool at Foss Park (corner of Broadway and McGrath Highway). The Lot is staffed by Full Circle and Next Wave student leaders Monday-Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on the weekends from 10:00 AM t0 8:00 PM through December 21st. Net proceeds benefit the school community at Next Wave and Full Circle.

Get that Christmas spirit on! And here's a little help from Rose Polenzani & Rose Cousins, recorded in Somerville, MA on December 2, 2008.
