Somerville named bicycle friendly community

City given bronze-level recognition by the League of American Bicyclists

With plans under way to expand its network of streets marked for bicycling and to extend the Community Path, Somerville has been named a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the Washington, D.C.-based League of American Bicyclists. Somerville joins a host of other cities receiving this level of recognition for its efforts to promote bicycling, including Kansas City, Mo.; Raleigh, N.C.; and Northampton, Mass.

Somerville added 10 miles of streets marked for bicycling last year and will add another 11 this year, making it approximately a 30-mile bicycle network inside a city of 4.1 square miles.

To help revitalize the Winter Hill and lower Broadway areas. the OSPCD is in the process of fine tuning a proposal that will expand the current zoning policy. ~Photos by Beecher Tuttle By Beecher Tuttle On Wednesday July 29th, the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development held an open community meeting to discuss the potential rezoning of the Broadway corridor in Somerville. The meeting, held at the Elizabeth Peabody House, was the last of three neighborhood meetings to educate residents on the effects and repercussions of the proposed zoning changes.

Read Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone's 2009 Mid-Term Address in the Somerville News. The steady progress throughout Somerville definitely makes me feel optimistic. Note some important shout-outs to the Winter Hill and East Somerville community, including the support of the East Somerville Community School after the 2007 fire, infrastructure and transportation development in East Somerville and Magoun Square as part of the Obama recovery plan, as well as preparation for the IKEA move to Assembly Square.

I have to admit though, I do miss Good Time.

Memories of a Hill gone by Jimmy Del Ponte On The Silly Side This week's column was a breeze to write - a gentleman who reads my ramblings every week sent me an email about growing up on Winter Hill. I asked him if I could share his memoirs with the readers here and he said yes. This is basically his story - as he told it to me. I guess you could call this week's column "On The Hilly Side." He's not the kid whose mother hung out the window and yelled "Anthony..." on Wednesday afternoon in the North End; however, this Anthony has a lot of stories to tell about his childhood in the 'Ville. He went to the Arthur D. Healey School and then Northeastern Junior High School - which was condemned at the time, but still operated as a learning institution. Anthony then graduated from Somerville High School in 1981. Read more...

Photo by George P. Hassett Boy,there were a lot of people voting on Tuesday. Winter Hill is in the White House George P. Hassett Winter Hill, after decades of infamy as a capital of gangsterism, took the White House Tuesday. Barack Obama, who lived in a basement apartment at 365 Broadway from 1987 to 1990, became the first black president as Democrats reversed decades of Republican power in a nationwide political shift. However thin it may be, Obama - who was raised in states across the country and whose worldview was shaped in New York City and Chicago - still brings a piece of Winter Hill with him into history.
