The City of Somerville is partnering with East Somerville Main Streets and Foss Fest to kick off the city's SomerStreets inititiave, with Carnaval @ Somerstreets! Somerville's new Open Streets Initiative, SomerStreets, is a monthly celebration from June - October of each year, during which the City closes sections of roads to vehicle traffic in favor of walking, running, biking, dancing, and other activities! By partnering with local businesses and organizations, one Sunday each month the city transforms different Somerville neighborhoods into celebrations of active living, community pride, and live entertainment. Carnaval@SomerStreets Comes to Broadway on Sunday June 5th from 12-4pm!

Carnaval@SomerStreets is coming to Broadway from East Somerville up to Temple Street on Sunday June 5th from noon until 4pm. Please mark your calendars and please help spread the word about this event by reposting this announcement and emailing to anyone who might be interested in attending.

SomerStreets is an initiative by the City of Somerville and its partners to close the streets to cars and open them to activity. On June 5th from 12-4pm, Broadway will be blocked off from Sullivan Square to Temple Street (Star Market) to make room for dancing, cycling, skating and fun!

Call to Artists: Bands and musicians, artist and craft vendors and volunteers are all wanted for Carnaval at SomerStreets, on June 5, 2011!

Next Wave Junior High School and Full Circle High School are Somerville's alternative, moderate special needs schools. Both are designed to meet the special academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of adolescents and teens who, for many reasons, have experienced failure in the traditional education settings.

The annual Next Wave and Full Circle Christmas Tree and Wreath Fundraiser began on Wednesday, December 2nd at 4:00 PM. Live, fresh wreaths for $15 and live trees ranging in price from $19 to $49 are for sale in the tree lot, located near the DCR pool at Foss Park (corner of Broadway and McGrath Highway). The Lot is staffed by Full Circle and Next Wave student leaders Monday-Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on the weekends from 10:00 AM t0 8:00 PM through December 21st. Net proceeds benefit the school community at Next Wave and Full Circle.

Somerville’s Foss Park was founded on June 18, 1876. Originally named Broadway Park, it was renamed in 1921 after Saxton Conant Foss, son of Somerville’s poet laureate, Sam Walter Foss. Saxton Foss had been killed during World War I in France, at the age of thirty.

In 1951, the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC) took over ownership and maintenance of Foss Park. Further development of Foss Park was halted in the 60’s due to the threat of creating the Inner Belt, which would have taken a portion of the park.

Somerville Cares About Prevention

For the sixth consecutive year, Somerville Cares About Prevention (SCAP) will partner with the City of Somerville and the Somerville Police Department to host the local celebration of the National Night Out Against Crime and Drugs. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4th starting at 5 pm at Foss Park - activities will begin at 5 pm with youth activity tables and an obstacle course sponsored by the Somerville Recreation Department. Also, the Somerville Police Department will be on site with Child ID kits to engage youth and families. At 6:30 pm, the State Police K-9 Unit will conduct a presentation followed by a performance by the 2009 Somerville Sunsetters at 7:30 pm.

A Little Confused About Foss Park

I've been reading with great interest: Somerville Massachusetts, A Brief History by Dee Morris and Dora St. Martin. In it, the authors describe the story of Saxton Conant Foss, sent from Somerville to France to contribute to the effort in World War I. He was killed in the line of duty and posthumously awarded a Distinguished Service Cross. Foss Park is named in his honor.

I often see this park refered to as "Saxton J. Foss Park". There's just a minor discrpancy in the middle initial. Anyone know why?
