The City of Somerville is partnering with East Somerville Main Streets and Foss Fest to kick off the city's SomerStreets inititiave, with Carnaval @ Somerstreets! Somerville's new Open Streets Initiative, SomerStreets, is a monthly celebration from June - October of each year, during which the City closes sections of roads to vehicle traffic in favor of walking, running, biking, dancing, and other activities! By partnering with local businesses and organizations, one Sunday each month the city transforms different Somerville neighborhoods into celebrations of active living, community pride, and live entertainment. Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 5 Alderman Sean T. O’Donovan and the Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Environment, would like to invite all interested parties to a series of community meetings focusing on the implementation of the Single Stream Recycling pilot program in a section of Ward 5 (see map above) beginning on October 6th. The meetings will be held on Thursday, September 16th at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 25th at 11:00 am, in the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA), 3rd floor community room located at 259 Lowell Street.

Read Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone's 2009 Mid-Term Address in the Somerville News. The steady progress throughout Somerville definitely makes me feel optimistic. Note some important shout-outs to the Winter Hill and East Somerville community, including the support of the East Somerville Community School after the 2007 fire, infrastructure and transportation development in East Somerville and Magoun Square as part of the Obama recovery plan, as well as preparation for the IKEA move to Assembly Square.

I have to admit though, I do miss Good Time.

"Broadway Streetscape Project in East Somerville

The City has developed a preliminary plan for a streetscape and roadway improvement project for Broadway, between McGrath Highway and the City Line near Sullivan Square. Since this past winter the City has worked in conjunction with East Somerville Main Streets, and East Somerville residents and business owners to come up with a pedestrian-friendly, multi-modal, transit-oriented street that encourages people to walk, bike and gather along East Somerville's central business corridor."
